The Feminist Academy

A dedicated research and advocacy initiative by Bayside Therapies in Sydney. We focus on in-depth research and documentary filmmaking to advocate for domestic violence survivors, illuminate systemic hurdles, and drive meaningful community change.

Research advocating for systemic change

Our core research projects focus on capturing the real, lived experiences of women navigating police, legal, and court systems. By documenting these journeys with care, academic rigour, and feminist ethics, we provide vital evidence to advocate for institutional reform and real action to protect women and children.

Our first research project is focusing on the experiences of women nationwide attempting to report their family violence to police. We are also interested in police attitudes and experiences with same.

Documentary and short film storytelling

Film is a powerful medium for truth-telling and empathy. Through documentary and short film making, we elevate survivor voices to broader audiences, sparking vital community conversations and urging systemic action to save lives. Our work bridges heartfelt storytelling with trauma-informed practice.

We are currently working on our first documentary "Watching the detectives" exploring police accountability with women survivors in Family Violence reporting Australia wide.

"Having a safe, trauma-informed space to contribute to real research and advocacy made me feel heard after years of silence. This work is genuinely changing how the system listens."
